One of my favourite runs this year was in the Island of Hoy in Orkney.Day started a bit dreich like many days here but an early start on the ferry from Stromness on mainland Orkney to Moness on Hoy.This ferry is like nothing we know here. More like an angry blue bottle.Even large fishing boats cower at the side of the fairway as it hammers past. Sun coming out as we arrive at Hoy and a perilous landing up a flight of steps.Single track roads of course and a run of 5 or 6 miles up the glen leading to Rackwick and a half mile each way diversion up a singletrack path to the Dwarfie Stane. (If you don't know ask later.)On up a quiet road to spectacular cliff scenery at Rackwick and a couple of miles further by path to the Old Man of Hoy.Important part of the day is lunch here.Back down to the "main" road and a quick trip to the south end of Hoy and back for the return ferry in the afternoon.This is cycling like it used to be in the good old days.Quiet roads with little traffic,verdant vegetation on the verges with sunshine and light tailwinds all day.From Moness an alternative road is signposted as "not suitable for pedal cycles".This is a challenge for my next visit!

What is the "Dwarfie Stane" all about then?

The Dwarfie Stane is basically a large sandstone boulder about the size of a minibus which was hollowed out about 3500 years ago using what must have been stone tools.Unless you know where it is you would never find it as it away up a hillside about 1/2 mile from the road.It is the oldest such artifact in Europe and possibly the world but only known to the cognoscenti and others who like big words.

Given some power tools should not be a problem.Would fairly bring in the tourists.Could give it a fancy name like say jimkys cairn tho' a more celtic title would be better.St.James Tomb?Offhand after a few sherbets thought processes get a bit slow so there must be a better name. Mext weekend look for a suitable stone?
