Forecasts are that ticks are increasing in numbers and this summer even more so due to a mild winter. Also Lyme disease is increasing which is spread by tick bites. The commonest symptom apparently is a rash of red spots spreading out from the tick bite and perhaps flue like symptoms. This is the best of it as without treatment it can lead on to serious neurological conditions and worse. So far as I know there is no Lyme disease in this area at the moment but since it can be spread by migrating birds we cannot be complacent. There was discussion last year on how to remove ticks from the skin but some of the advice given does not accord with current thinking. Do not spray them with anything or try to smother with vaseline etc. The best thing is to use a pair of needle point tweezers or a "tick twister" and get as close to the skin as possible and pull the head straight out. Do not twist. So long as you get the head out cleanly without squeezing the body you should be ok.Enjoy your summer!

OK we can be facetious but this is a really serious topic.Tick bites can lead to serious illness. The message is to get rid of ticks from the skin properly and in the best possible way.Lyme disease is not currently well known and most doctors have never seen a case but it is a problem all those who are likely to get ticks should be aware of now and more so in the future.

Facetious?
You ridicule my protection suggestion out of hand? Have you tried it? Have you even given thought that the simple bike clip around your ankles while wearing long trousers (don't try this while wearing shorts the pain is too severe) can protect you?

So let me get this right.... Most doctors have never seen a case? So would that suggest that this is scare mongering or sorry, parting with good information in a way to create potential panic on the island? Are there some tick aids being sold on the island that I am not aware of and this is a potential sales opportunity to shift the stuff fast?

WeeC will also be happy to supply natures own remedy's to various nasties out there, moss is his most useful item... WEEC?

I have to be honest here and say I have never seen a tick that is blind, nor have I ever seen a tick in a wheelchair. It's clear that I am dealing with a tickologist of a higher degree, just a pity that being that way means you also lose sight of the obvious.....

Rim polishing is theraputuc.

I reckon I have had the most Tic bites in the whole world Although non on my balls like Gibbo .

I would say last year was the best year for ticks only about 6 or 7 A miricle sometimes i would find that per day in the forest .the friggin little buggers love me ......i kid you not .

Now Lymes Disease is not a laughing matter but will it stop me From doing what im doing no way ?
I might get bit and be unlucky then again i might not wear a helmet for 40 years and think im invincible and one day fall off and crack my head on the side of the pavement and Die .

I do now think of Lymes disease and try to Be more wary of tics .

Twist Anti clockwise was always the case when you Pulled them out as thier litle fangs twisted clockwise
but ? who is right and who is Wrong and if birds Carry the disease lets kill all the Sea Eagles ..
Yes No?

The Gibbo is a hardy animal, his balls are supposed to be like steel, though I reckon if he had a ham shank now and again this would solve the problem once and for all.

I have had zero ticks, so I suppose I am lucky or I have the rare genetic makeup that may be the cure to the world-wide tick attacks!

Neither is hitting a tree at 40MPH nor going over the handlebars, but then thats why you wear protective gear is it not.

Die with dignity - you cannot do that with a pink helmet.

I do now think of Lymes disease and try to Be more wary of tics .
I think of watching road signs and rogue trees!

You can take anthing to extreme - even lack of humour and being a gibbo.

You can prepare yourself for knowing the enemy by visiting the site below. If you take the time to read it, you will also see my original protection advice is sound, just a pity some people throw their brain into 4th gear when it should be in neutral.
